2015 UC Riverside Classes with Kristi Darwick

1. Lowercase and Writing with the Pointed Pen
Sat. 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Apr. 18
Modern variations of Copperplate script are all the rage, used by cutting-edge graphic artists and calligraphers. We’ll start with lower case, writing with something as simple as a pencil to learn the basic shapes and strokes, and then, progressing to the dip pen. Some people prefer to use only lower case in their projects, and this is a great start, should you wish to continue your study of Copperplate writing.

2. Uppercase and Techniques for Beautiful Writing
Sat. 9 a.m.-4 p.m., May 9
We will progress to writing elegant capital letters, numerals, and punctuation, as well as learning techniques for writing beautiful Copperplate for personal and professional applications. This session leads the student through developing skills in traditional Copperplate handwriting. The student may then wish to follow-up with a class on flourishing and modern Copperplate variations. Prerequisite: Session 1 or some copperplate skills

3. Elegant Flourishing and Modern Script
Sat. 9 a.m.-4 p.m., May 30
In this session, we will build on the “rules” that make for beautiful letters and learn to break those rules to give a modern influence to the writing. We’ll add flourishing—the beautiful swirls and loops that give Copperplate, and its variations, their wonderful extravagance.
Prerequisite: Session 2 or some copperplate skills
